#2 NordVPN
NordVPN, Sister company to Surfshark, although both run as separate entities.
We have always advocated NordVPN as the best VPN provider on the market, however, (NordLynx an adaptation of WireGuard®) is Sadly NOT supported to run on Routers, so NordVPN have now slipped to position #2. A great VPN provider for most people, works well with OpenVPN on our DD-WRT Flashed routers.
Still one of the best VPN providers on the market.
NordVPN is often considered a top choice due to its strong emphasis on privacy with a strict no-logs policy, fast connection speeds, a large server network across the globe, user-friendly interface, advanced features like Double VPN for extra encryption, and regular independent audits that verify its privacy claims, making it a reliable option for users seeking robust online security and access to geo-restricted content.
NordVPN is headquartered in Panama, which although not usually important for most service providers, is significant for VPN services. Panama has no data retention laws and their government does not (as far as we know) carry out Internet surveillance. This means that legally, NordVPN does not need to retain logs of its users’ activities – great for your privacy!
NordVPN Protocols:
- NordLynx an adaptation of WireGuard: sleek, Fast, modern, secure.
*** NordLynx NOT supported run from Routers by NordVPN! *** - OpenVPN: Great for all-around security.
- IKEv2/IPsec: Outdated protocol not recommended.

NordVPN uses encryption that would take billions of years for the world's most powerful computer to unencrypt.
NordVPN Adblocker:
Surf online free from intrusive ads. We can add this to the router configuration. Please ask if required.
Allows 10 simultaneous connections:
A single NordVPN subscription works simultaneously on up to 10 devices.
#3 ExpressVPN

Other VPN Providers that support WireGuard® on a Router
We list the below VPN providers for you to inspect. ALL support WireGuard® run from a router. BUT are NOT on our recommended VPN Provider list above for one reason or another. This can be for any reason, our testing of their service, server disconnections, supported streaming services, their price is normally a large factor, etc. We will not list the reasons why each one is not on our recommended list. We listed the below VPN Providers to simply assist you with your search for VPN providers that support WireGuard run from a Router.
VPN Protocols
WireGuard® is the lightest and by far the fastest VPN protocol. With only 4,000 lines of code, WireGuard® is less susceptible to security threats as it’s easier to manage and scale. The lightweight structure enables high-speed connections without compromising security. ChaCha20 encryption, less configurable then OpenVPN. NOT Available on Routers from most VPN Providers, please check before with the VPN provider before purchasing if you want to run it from a Router. This is our recommended VPN protocol for all our Routers, its faster with less resources / overheads than OpenVPN making it the ideal choice for FAST VPN throughput, (Download speeds) ! WireGuard® is supported on all our DD-WRT Flashed Routers!
OpenVPN is open-sourced, meaning that it’s been approved by security specialists worldwide. With between 70,000 and 400,000 lines of code, TCP & UDP Protocols, AES-256 encryption, highly configurable. OpenVPN is supported on all our Routers.
IKEv2 (short for Internet Key Exchange version 2) is a fast protocol. It has been improved many times. IKEv2 is very popular among mobile users due to its speed and ability to switch networks on demand. We would recommend using Wireguard or OpenVPN. This Protocol has security concerns, considered really outdated by todays standards!
In simple terms, WireGuard is generally considered faster because it has a simpler design with less complex encryption algorithms, resulting in lower CPU overhead and faster processing times compared to other VPN protocols like OpenVPN, allowing for smoother data transmission even on less powerful hardware like Routers; it also utilizes the UDP protocol, which is typically faster than TCP for data transfer.
WireGuard is a new approach to a VPN protocol that is meant to be, well, better than current options like OpenVPN and IPsec. Perhaps the best way to explain is to simply quote you from the first paragraph of the WireGuard home page:
WireGuard® is an extremely simple yet fast and modern VPN that utilizes state-of-the-art cryptography. It aims to be faster, simpler, leaner, and more useful than IPSec, while avoiding the massive headache. It intends to be considerably more performant than OpenVPN. WireGuard is designed as a general purpose VPN for running on embedded interfaces and super computers alike, fit for many different circumstances. Initially released for the Linux kernel, it is now cross-platform (Windows, macOS, BSD, iOS, Android) and widely deployable. The simpler, leaner part of this is crucial. Whereas the code for OpenVPN runs into hundreds of thousands of lines, the code for WireGuard is currently around 4,000 lines. This, combined with the use of state-of-the-art cryptography, generates results that have many people very excited. Comparisons between WireGuard and OpenVPN protocols often highlight Wireguard's modern design and performance advantages.
OpenVPN vs WireGuard Speeds: Many people are switching to the WireGuard protocol for the performance advantages — namely faster speeds.
We have been testing WireGuard over the past few years and can confirm that performance is excellent. It not only offers faster speeds, but WireGuard is faster to establish a connection, it's also very stable run on a Router. Wireguard is approximately 3x faster than OpenVPN on Full Fibre lines, making a massive difference in throughput (Download speeds).
Wireguard outperforms OpenVPN on every router we sell, it's important you have a VPN provider that supports Wireguard client run on a DD-WRT flashed Router. Our recommended VPN provider Surfshark certainly does, competitively priced, with all the advantages of a top tier VPN provider but with Wireguard supported to run on a Router.
Router Processor (CPU) Power And RAM
Processor and RAM are the heart of your router’s performance. A router with a powerful fast CPU processor is essential for handling the encryption and decryption of data that VPNs require.
Look for Routers that have a fast CPU and ample RAM to ensure smooth performance, especially if you’re streaming in high definition or gaming online.
Why it matters: VPNs, especially high-speed ones like Surfshark, require a router with enough power to keep up with the encryption process. Without sufficient processor speed or RAM, your internet speeds will suffer!
Our guide for recommended Router CPU clock speeds for good VPN throughput:
A router with a minimum CPU clock speed of 1.0GHz up-to 1.7GHz is recommended on FFTC (Stands for: Fibre To The Cabinet) with lines speeds of 10Mbps to 80Mbps.
A router with a minimum CPU clock speed of 1.6GHz up-to 2.2GHz is recommended on FTTP (Stands for Fibre To The Premises also known as: Full Fibre) with lines speeds of 80Mbps to 2200Mbps.

Why You Need a VPN
Do you use certain streaming services? Do you want internet security? If the answer is yes, it’s very important you consider a VPN service now! You really should be using a VPN, and even if you don’t think so now, at some point in the future you may consider a VPN as important as your internet connection. The most important thing you need to know about a VPN: It secures your devices internet connection to guarantee that all of the data you’re sending and receiving is encrypted and secured from prying eyes.
Some Basics
Once you connect to a VPN, your true IP address, network location and other session details reflect those of the VPN server, rather than of the home, office, or public Wi-Fi connection you’re using.
Once encrypted by a VPN, even if captured, that data is unreadable to any attacker or packet sniffer (e.g. your Internet Service Provider which we will refer to as your ISP from now on).
Using a VPN service will ensure that your privacy and security is maintained online for very little cost, privacy and security is always a good thing regardless of what you’re doing!
Everything connecting via Ethernet or Wi-Fi to a router running a VPN is always protected behind the encrypted VPN connection, only using 1 of your allocated allowed connections, leaving you spare VPN connections to be used on Mobiles etc. while outside your home or office. Running a VPN on your router has many advantages, one of which is more devices can be connected at any one time. If your interested in purchasing a Router to run a VPN, please review our selection of Flashed Routers HERE.
If you wish to view or download UK Snoopers Charter please click the image above. It's truly frightening !
The majority of people in the UK are unaware of just how closely the government can monitor their online activities, a new report claims. 76 per cent of Brits are completely unaware of the highly controversial Investigatory Powers Act also known as the Snoopers Charter which allows the government to see everything we do online. 23 per cent were unable to name any of the 48 government bodies that have access to their full browsing history. These include the police and the secret service, as well as the Department of Health, HM Revenue & Customs, the Department for Work and Pensions and even the Food Standards Agency. 33 per cent of respondents thought the government had no power to monitor online activities, and 59 per cent said they wouldn’t consent to the government or third parties viewing and monitoring their digital activities. However, 63 per cent of the 2,000 adults involved the the study, which was conducted in April, said they would only agree to being monitored in order to prevent criminal activity or a potential terrorist threat. “The public and parliamentary debate about the Investigatory Powers Act was overshadowed by Brexit so it is perhaps unsurprising that many people are not aware of the Government’s extreme surveillance powers, Jim Killock, the executive director of Open Rights Group, told The Independent.
Keep Your ( ISP’s ) Eyes Off Your Traffic !
A VPN makes your ISP 'peering eyes' blind to the contents and source of your Internet traffic. Keep your surfing and streaming private and secure with use of a VPN !
Stream From Servers Anonymously
On the other side of the coin, being able to browse, download, and stream anonymously, not only is your ISP blind to your traffic, but the server you download / stream from is blind to who you are and where you’re from.
Your true IP address can’t be tracked by the servers you’re downloading / streaming from, since the servers just sees the VPN server IP address and location that the traffic is routing through. The VPN companies we recommend DO NOT keep logs of your activity!!
Access Geo-Blocked Content or Internet Censorship
Some streaming servers and indeed certain Web Sites on the World Wide Web may be geo-blocking you, meaning they are only going to serve to users in a certain set of countries. With a VPN, you can choose a server in the country of your choice, and then those servers will think you are from that country, they will then serve the content accordingly with a simple click of a button within your VPN program/app.
Early Access to New Releases
Another popular use for VPNs is getting access to new releases before everyone else.
For instance, if there’s a new video game coming out and it’s releasing at midnight on a certain day, if you’re in the USA, you can set your VPN to connect to somewhere in Asia to get access to download and play the game almost a day earlier than the rest of your friends.
How to Know if the VPN is Working
Before connecting to your VPN, go to myiplocation.org or whatsmyip.org and see what IP and location it says. This is how the Internet sees you without a VPN. The location is usually approximate to somewhere in your area or could be miles away, this is ISP dependent.
Now, connect to your VPN and then refresh that same website in your browser. You should now see the IP address and location change to match the VPN server IP and location. This is how the Internet sees you when you’re connected to your VPN.
We hope this has helped you.
